Sinyora Synagogue is also known as Giveret or La Signora. It is one of the historic synagogues of Kemeraltı.
- Area: Kemeraltı (First Juderia)
- Also known as: Giveret; La Signora
- Built: rebuilt after the 1841 fire; linked to a 1664 donation
- Status: Historic synagogue
History
The building burned several times in the seventeenth century and was destroyed in the great fire of 1841, then rebuilt with the support of Moiz Bengiat Yerushalmi. Local tradition long held that it was funded by Dona Gracia Nassi, a woman of Portuguese origin (1510-1569). More recent research points instead to a woman named Lea, who donated it to the community in 1664 before leaving Izmir for the holy land.
What to notice
The ground plan shows a shift from a central layout to a double Tevah arrangement. The Ehal, with Torah verses on its doors, follows the triple composition characteristic of Izmir’s synagogues.
