Rosh Ha-Har Synagogue is part of the Karataş heritage layer of Jewish Izmir. Its name means “top of the mountain”.

History
The synagogue was built in the 1890s, when the area was still thinly settled with only a few single-storey houses nearby. It began as a small synagogue on the upper part of Halil Rıfat Paşa Street to serve Jewish families moving from the old quarter into the new one.
What to notice
The building follows a central plan and combines tradition with the setting of a later neighbourhood, with an entrance area and a garden. It sits alongside Bet Israel in the wider story of the community’s movement beyond the old Kemeraltı quarter.
