Shaar Ashamayim belongs to the later geography of Jewish Izmir, in Alsancak, where most of the community lives today. It is the synagogue in most regular use, after Bet Israel.

History
The synagogue was built in the mid-1960s to serve the Jewish families who had settled in Alsancak as the community moved on from the historic quarters. It was rebuilt in recent years and reopened on 1 December 2019, within the building complex known locally as Liga.
What to notice
The design is modern, with dark wood furnishings, and it keeps the triple Ark arrangement found in the older synagogues of Izmir. Although the congregation follows Orthodox practice, there is no mehitza dividing the women’s and men’s areas.
