Jewish cemeteries and memory in Izmir.

Jewish İzmir

Mezarlıklar

İzmir Yahudi mezarlıkları ve aile hafızası.

Jewish cemeteries in Izmir are part of the city’s religious and family memory. They connect communal care, genealogy, rabbinic history and the long movement of Jewish life across the city.

  • Active: Altındağ Jewish Cemetery
  • Historic: Gürçeşme and Bornova (no longer active)
  • At Gürçeşme: the tomb of Rabbi Hayim Palachi

The cemeteries

The community’s cemeteries include the Altındağ Jewish Cemetery, which is active and maintained by the Izmir Jewish Cemetery Charity Association, and the older Gürçeşme and Bornova cemeteries, which are no longer active.

The Gürçeşme cemetery holds the tomb of Rabbi Hayim Palachi. Together with the Bet Hillel Synagogue and the nearby mikveh, his students remember these as connected places of memory.
